A Journey Through Ghibli

I have loved Studio Ghibli films for many years.
Of all of them, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has always been a particular favorite of mine.

What stayed with me most after visiting the Friday Road Show and Ghibli Exhibition was not only the displays of the films themselves.

The exhibition also looked back at the different eras in which Ghibli films were released, introducing things that were popular at the time and displaying familiar objects from those years.

As I walked through the exhibition, I found myself thinking, “I remember when things like this were popular.” It felt as though I was not only tracing the history of Ghibli, but also looking back on the years I had lived through myself.

Being able to experience the world of Nausicaä, a film I have loved for so long, was another memorable part of the visit.

Ghibli, the times we lived through, and my own memories.
For a moment, they all seemed to come together.

A Walk Through Kudamatsu Gokoku Shrine

I visited Kudamatsu Gokoku Shrine in Kudamatsu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

From beside the stone monument, I began climbing the stone steps.

The path was surrounded by thick bamboo, with some broken bamboo along the way.
It felt less carefully maintained than Matsuo Hachimangu.

    The stone steps continued upward.
Unable to see what lay ahead, and with no one else around, I felt a little uneasy as I climbed.

At the top of the steps, the torii and shrine building came into view.

Very little sunlight reached the bamboo-covered approach, but sunlight filled the shrine grounds beyond.
The quiet, empty grounds bathed in light felt somehow mysterious.

In front of the shrine stood two komainu guardian statues.
They looked very different from the ones I had seen at Matsuo Hachimangu, and their dignified expressions left a strong impression on me.

I could not see far into the shrine building.
Although nothing was visible inside, I somehow felt a presence there. It was a strange and mysterious feeling.

After paying my respects, I made my way back along the same path.
The stone steps that had made me feel a little uneasy on the way up no longer felt that way on my return.

The quiet bamboo-covered approach and the sunlit shrine grounds seemed to have very different atmospheres.
That contrast stayed with me as I left Kudamatsu Gokoku Shrine.

Located in Kudamatsu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Matsuo Hachimangu is a quiet local shrine.

Beyond the stone torii, a flight of steps leads upward into the trees.

Near the torii stands an information board describing the history of Matsuo Hachimangu.

From there, I climbed the stone steps surrounded by trees and made my way into the shrine grounds.

At the top of the steps, the main shrine building came into view.

The grounds were very quiet, but everything was carefully maintained. It gave me the sense that this shrine is still cherished and cared for by the local community.

After my visit, I made my way back down the same stone steps.

A Walk Around Suetakegawa Dam

I walked around Suetakegawa Dam, taking photographs of the scenes that caught my attention.

Surrounded by mountains, Beisen Lake was quiet. As I walked along the lakeside, it felt as though time was passing a little differently from in the city.

Seeing the dam structures up close gave me a different impression from viewing them from a distance.

What especially caught my attention was a closed gate and the narrow path continuing beyond it.

Of course, I could not go any farther, but surrounded by trees and with little visible beyond the gate, the scene had an atmosphere that felt somehow removed from everyday life.

“I wonder what lies beyond here.”

With that thought in mind, I found myself taking a photograph.

The First Frame

Several things came together, and I left the company where I had worked for many years.
It became an opportunity for me to try things I had never done before and explore something new.

Around that time, I found myself thinking about photography, something I had been interested in for quite a while.

I bought a beginner-friendly camera, and this was the very first photograph I took with it.

It isn’t a famous place or an extraordinary view.
But for me, this photograph marks the beginning of my journey with photography.
